How to Troubleshoot a Car Radio

Taking a relaxing drive listening to your favorite songs is one of life's pleasures. You can cruise along with your music turned high, and not worry about disturbing the neighbors. But what can you do if there's something wrong and the car radio is no longer working? There are a lot of internal and external issues that can be fixed, short of having to replace the unit. Let's explore the most common reasons your car radio has stopped, and look at some troubleshooting tips to help you solve this issue.

No Bass From Speakers

Check to see if the speaker wires are properly connected to the stereo amp and head unit. The positive terminal of the speaker must be connected to the positive terminal of any other component, including the battery. The same thing applies to the negative terminal needing to be connected to the negative terminal of all other components.

Another possible solution is to install an external amplifier. You can also choose to have a head unit upgrade to solve the no bass problem. What it comes down to is that your car stereo needs something that will increase the wattage.

Speaker Sound Cuts off Suddenly

Sound cutting off suddenly usually occurs when a speaker wire has become loose, or when the amplifier overheats. It's normal for amplifiers to generate a lot of heat, especially when the music is played at high volumes for a prolonged time. The amplifier needs to get enough airflow to manage the amount of heat being generated. To solve this issue make sure that there's enough airflow where the amplifier is mounted. Another possibility is that the speaker wires aren't properly connected.

Car Radio Not Working

A car radio fails to work when there's a problem in any of the power sources or parts where current passes through. Wiring is often an issue when a car radio fails to work. Car radios are connected to their power source, and the speakers, through wires that are mostly found under the dashboard. If the car radio turns on at irregular intervals it could be either a power or ground connection problem. Check to see if the ground connection is loose or rusted.

Car radios use fuses to prevent damage due to power upsurges. When a fuse is blown the car's audio circuit is broken, preventing the radio from being turned on. You can check if the fuse is blown by using a multimeter. First make sure that the system power is off and then turn the multimeter to ohms. Touch the metal caps on the fuse with the multimeter's testing leads and look for a reading. If there is a reading the fuse is working, if there's no reading it's blown and needs to be replaced.

If the car radio display and sound go on and off together it could be because the head unit isn'to getting enough power. If the radio regularly turns off when you drive around corners or pass over a bump, the connector at the back of the unit is loose.
